Designing for Real Life (And Rogue Puppies)

Last weekend was a reminder that even the best plans can go sideways fast. While walking our two dogs, our six month old puppy, Riggs, managed to wrap his leash around a neighbor’s mailbox post. Before I could react, the entire post and mailbox flew into the street and narrowly missed a passing van. Riggs panicked, slipped out of his harness, and took off toward home at full speed. Luckily my husband was home and intercepted him. He ran so hard he actually wore his back nails down.
Everyone was okay. The mailbox did not survive. My neighbors walked out just as I was attempting to drag it back into their yard. Thankfully they were incredibly kind and even laughed about it while I profusely apologized, assuring me it was no big deal and that they wanted to replace it anyway. I could not have asked for nicer neighbors in that moment!

What This Has to Do With Interior Design
This moment perfectly sums up why I design homes for real life, not perfection.
Homes are not showrooms. They are lived in. Kids spill things. Dogs panic. Life gets messy. When a space is designed only to look good, it often becomes stressful to live in. With 2 kids of my own and 2 dogs at home, I can relate to life being hectic and needing a functional space that works for our lifestyle.
A Simple Design Tip You Can Use Right Now
Before choosing finishes, furniture, or paint colors, ask yourself:
What needs to be easy in this space?
This one question can change everything.
If you have pets or kids, durability matters more than in other situations. If mornings feel chaotic, storage and layout should come before decorative details. If you entertain often, lighting and flow should lead the way.
When function comes first, the rest of the design falls into place.
Design That Actually Works
When you work with us, we take the time to understand how you actually use each space. From there, we design layouts with function as the foundation and layer in finishes and details that make the home feel beautiful. The best interior design supports your everyday life while still looking intentional. That balance is always my goal at Hazel & Home Design Co. Thoughtful, livable interiors that feel elevated without being untouchable.
